Newcastle Dog and Cat Shelter training and rehoming for stray dogs

Newcastle Dog and Cat Shelter

Every animal deserves a second chance, and at Newcastle Dog and Cat Shelter, dedicated staff and volunteers work tirelessly to give them just that. Over the past six months, the shelter has welcomed 276 dogs and 172 cats, many arriving with behavioural challenges that, without intervention, could prevent them from finding a forever home.

Thanks to our £5,000 grant, the team has been able to provide essential training and support, transforming fearful, anxious, and reactive animals into confident companions. Whether it’s helping a dog overcome its fear of human touch or teaching a high-energy stray how to stay calm, this work ensures successful adoptions and prevents animals from being returned.

Changing Lives: Case Studies

🐶 Lili – Arrived fearful and reactive, struggling with handling and veterinary care. After 40 hours of behaviour work, she now trusts staff and tolerates treatments with ease.

🐾 Spirit – Over-excited and prone to nipping, she needed structured training to stay calm. With 10 hours of work, she learned new behaviours and was successfully rehomed.

🐕 Posie – Initially too fearful to interact, she gradually built trust through gentle exposure and enrichment, requiring 15 hours of training before being ready for rehoming.

These are just a few examples of the many lives changed through this vital work. With continued support, Newcastle Dog and Cat Shelter can keep giving animals the second chance they deserve—helping them move from fear and uncertainty to love and security.
